Ellie Kaufman is a Producer in CNN’s Washington, DC bureau covering the Defense Department and the US military as a part of CNN’s National Security team.
Before joining the National Security team, she covered all aspects of Washington politics, including Capitol Hill, federal agencies and national elections. During her time in Washington, Ellie has covered the 2020 Presidential election, the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump on Capitol Hill, and the longest federal government shutdown in American history in 2019, among other stories.
She was previously a News Assistant in CNN’s New York bureau. While in New York, Ellie covered domestic breaking news stories including the 2016 Chelsea bombing in New York City, the first federal travel ban lawsuit during the Trump administration, and the Larry Nassar sentencing hearings.
Ellie started working at CNN in 2016. Her previous work has been published in The Huffington Post, Vox, Quartz, Fast Company, and Mic. She graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2013 with a B.A. in English Literature and Hispanic Studies. She is a candidate for a Master’s of Fine Arts in nonfiction writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is expected to graduate in 2022.
