Democrat will run North Carolina public schools, beating GOP nominee who called for violence against Obama and Biden

Democratic candidate for state superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green during the NC Association of School Administrators' candidates' forum in Wilmington, North Carolina, on March 22.

Democrat Mo Green will win the race for North Carolina superintendent of public instruction, CNN projects, positioning the former chief of Guilford County Schools as the overseer of the state’s public school system.

Green will defeat conservative activist Michele Morrow, a former homeschool teacher who does not have previous experience in education and has decried public schools. Morrow unseated incumbent superintendent Catherine Truitt in the GOP primary.

Education and parental rights have become a major flashpoint in GOP-majority states, including North Carolina, where efforts to limit teachings on race and gender identity have advanced.

Democrat Jeff Jackson will also defeat Republican Dan Bishop to become North Carolina’s next attorney general, CNN projects, following a faceoff between the two sitting congressmen.

Jackson, a former prosecutor who serves in the Army National Guard, was elected to Congress in 2022. He ran on a safety platform, focusing on violent crimes and deaths related to fentanyl.

Here are other key projections from CNN:

  • Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. will win a second term in New Jersey’s 7th District, defeating Democrat Sue Altman.
  • Democratic Rep. Emilia Sykes will win reelection and defeat Republican Kevin Coughlin in Ohio’s 13th District.
  • Republican Rep. Zach Nunn will win reelection in Iowa’s 3rd District, defeating Democrat Lanon Baccam.
  • Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans will win reelection in Virginia’s 2nd District, defeating fellow Navy veteran Missy Cotter Smasal.

GOP has flipped 4 seats and Democrats have flipped one, CNN projects. Here's the latest on House races

Republican candidates have flipped four seats and Democrats can claim one in the tightly contested race for control of the House of Representatives, according to CNN projections,

CNN projects that Democrat John Mannion will defeat Republican Rep. Brandon Williams in their critical House race in Central New York, flipping the district back to Democrats two years after Williams narrowly won it for the GOP.

And Republican Rob Bresnahan Jr. will unseat Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright in Pennsylvania’s 8th District, flipping a district that had supported Donald Trump in 2020, defeating the incumbent who has served in the House since 2013.

Earlier, CNN projected that GOP candidates would flip three seats in North Carolina. The Republican Party is defending a very narrow majority in the House.

Here are the other key projections from CNN:

Democrat Ilhan Omar in Minnesota’s 5th District: Omar will win a fourth term, defeating Republican Dalia al-Aqidi.

Democrat Eric Sorensen in Illinois’ 17th District: Sorensen will also win re-election, defeating Republican Joe McGraw.

Democrat Jahana Hayes in Connecticut’s 5th District: The congresswoman defeats opponent Republican George Logan, in a rematch of the 2022 contest.

Republican Brian Fitzpatrick in Pennsylvania’s 1st District: The former FBI special agent and federal prosecutor will win re-election, beating Democratic challenger Ashley Ehasz.

Democrat Henry Cuellar in Texas 28th District: The conservative Democrat will defeat Navy veteran Jay Furman. Cuellar is under indictment on charges of bribery, money laundering and acting as an agent of the government of Azerbaijan.

Democrat Lateefah Simon in California’s 12th District: Simon will succeed Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee, who made an unsuccessful bid for California’s Senate seat.

Democrat Tom Suozzi in New York’s 3rd District: Suozzi wins re-election in the critical Long Island district, securing a full term after his victory in a special election earlier in the year.

Trump celebrates Republicans taking control of Senate

Former President Donald Trump speaks at his election night watch party in West Palm Beach, Florida, on November 6.

Former President Donald Trump celebrated Republicans winning control of the Senate while speaking at an address to supporters early Wednesday morning. CNN has projected the GOP will gain control of the Senate in a significant victory for the party.

CNN has not yet called the race for the former president and votes are still being counted across several states. However, according to CNN projections he only needs four more electoral votes to win the presidency.

“The number of victories in the Senate was absolutely incredible,” he added.

4 states vote to protect abortion rights while effort to expand access in Florida fails. Here's the latest

Supporters hold posters during a rally launching FIRM, or Freedom in Reproduction Maryland, a group that campaigned in support of the constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights in Maryland.

More than two years after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal constitutional right to an abortion, voters in 10 states cast ballots on whether to cement reproductive rights in their state constitutions.

Measures to protect abortion access in Arizona, Colorado, New York and Maryland will pass, CNN projects. In New York, Colorado and Maryland, where abortion is currently legal at least up to the point of viability, the measures will maintain current abortion access. In Arizona, the amendment is expected to overturn the state’s current ban on abortions 15 weeks into pregnancy.

But a Florida amendment to protect the right to an abortion up to the point of viability will fail, CNN projects, with the amendment falling short of the 60% voter threshold for passage. The state’s six-week ban will remain in place.

Three other states – Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota – had ballot measures on whether to invalidate their states’ current abortion bans or restrictive policies.

And in Nebraska, voters are weighing in on a dueling measure that would do the opposite – cement the current abortion ban in the state’s constitution.

Meanwhile, Trump needs 4 more electoral votes to win presidency, CNN projects

Based on CNN’s current projections, Vice President Kamala Harris’ path to victory is shrinking.

Former President Donald Trump has 266 electoral votes and Harris has 188 electoral votes, CNN projects. That means Trump only needs to win four more electoral votes to win the presidency.

CNN has projected that Trump will win several key battleground states — including North Carolina, Georgia, and more pivotally, Pennsylvania.

Republicans have flipped the Senate, while the House race continues. Here’s what to know

The U.S. Capitol is seen on the night of October 9, 2023.

The GOP will win control of the Senate, CNN projects — a significant victory for Republicans who haven’t had majority of the chamber since 2021.

The previous Democrat majority in the Senate had already looked precarious, with just a razor-thin margin — and the Republican win was cinched after GOP candidates flipped Senate seats in both Ohio and West Virginia.

Republicans are also still defending a narrow majority in the House, which could take a week or more before the results are officially determined.

Senate races: Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Rep. John Curtis of Utah, both Republicans, will win their Senate races, CNN projects. Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar was re-elected in Minnesota.

House races: Republicans will flip three North Carolina seats in the House, with CNN projected wins for GOP candidates Brad Knott, Tim Moore and Addison McDowell.

California Democrats Laura Friedman and Luz Rivas, Wisconsin Republican Tony Wied and Minnesota Democrat Kelly Morrison will also win their congressional dictricts, CNN projects.

Governors races: Democrat Bob Ferguson will be Washington’s next governor, CNN projects. Meanwhile, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox won reelection — the sixth Republican in a row to serve as governor in the state.

Ballot measures: Colorado and Arizona voters will approve measures to enshrine the right to abortion in their state constitutions, CNN projects.

In Colorado, the procedure remains legal with no gestational limit, but the projected approval of the amendment means public funds can be used toward abortions. Meanwhile in Arizona, the projected approval expands access to the procedure in the state, which currently bans abortion at 15 weeks into pregnancy. Now, it will be allowed “up to fetal viability” — which doctors believe to be around 22 to 24 weeks.

Eight states will also bar noncitizen voting, CNN projects — even though that’s already illegal in federal elections.

Abortion rights supporters celebrate a few successes – and one big loss

Supporters listen during an Arizona for Abortion Access news conference on July 3, 2024, at the Arizona State Capitol.

Measures to enshrine abortion access in states constitutions will pass in New York, Maryland, Colorado and Arizona, and fail in Florida, CNN projects.

Abortion rights supporters say this is a big win for Arizona, where residents essentially voted to overturn the state’s ban on abortion at 15 weeks into pregnancy.

Although Florida’s abortion rights measure is projected to receive a majority of votes, it will not meet the 60% voter threshold needed to pass. The current six-week abortion ban will remain in place in the state that once served as a major access point for abortion patients from states with restrictions.

“As the majority of Florida voters made clear tonight, they want their reproductive freedom back. But due to the high 60% threshold and the state’s disinformation campaign, they must continue to live with the fear, uncertainty, and denial of care caused by the reversal of Roe,” Nancy Northup, President & CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said Tuesday night in a statement.

The anti-abortion group SBA Pro-Life America said Florida is “the model for how the pro-life movement will win future ballot measure fights,” the anti-abortion group SBA Pro-Life America said in a statement.

CNN Projection: 8 states will vote to bar noncitizen voting, something already illegal in federal elections

Voters in eight states, most of them heavily Republican, will approve ballot measures to require US citizenship to vote, CNN projects, even though it is already illegal for noncitizens to cast ballots in federal elections.

CNN has fact-checked the Republican allegations of widespread noncitizen voting and found only a tiny number of examples of noncitizens voting in elections when they were ineligible to do so. In one recent example, Michigan prosecutors charged a Chinese citizen with voter fraud and perjury after he allegedly cast a ballot in the 2024 election.

CNN Projection: Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will win reelection in Nebraska’s Senate race

Sen. Deb Fisher speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill on May 1 in Washington, DC.

Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will win reelection in Nebraska, defeating an unexpectedly strong challenge from independent Dan Osborn, CNN projects.

Fischer was first elected to the Senate in 2012, when she became the first female senator elected to a full term in Nebraska. Prior to being elected to Congress, she served in Nebraska’s unicameral legislature.

Osborn, a Navy veteran and industrial mechanic, gave a tougher-than-expected challenge to Fischer.

Osborn and his allies outspent Republicans and garnered attention with buzzy ads, including one in which he burned the word “LIE” into a TV to knock attack ads from his opponent. In another spot, he called Fischer and her colleagues in the US Senate “a bunch of millionaires controlled by billionaires.”

Fischer portrayed Osborn as a “Trojan horse” for Democrats and sought to tie him to party figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden, and Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Former President Donald Trump also sought to tie Osborn to the left in his endorsement of Fischer.

Cornyn and Thune, both running for Senate GOP leader, celebrate as Republicans flip chamber

Senate Minority Whip John Thune and Sen. John Cornyn, both of whom are running to be the next Senate GOP leader, have released statements celebrating Republicans flipping the chamber.

CNN has projected that the GOP will flip control of the Senate.

Cornyn, representing Texas, continued to pitch himself as the next GOP leader, ahead of next week’s secret ballot election.

“From my experience both as Whip advancing President Trump’s agenda through the Senate to serving as a rank-and-file member now, I have learned what works and what does not,” he said — vowing to restore the role of Senate committees, improve communication and transparency, and get rid of “backroom deals or forced votes on bills without adequate time for review, debate, and amendment.”

Three North Carolina House seats flip

From left: Addison McDowell, Brad Knott and Tim Moore

Republicans will flip at least two North Carolina seats in the House, CNN projects.

Brad Knott in North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District: Knott, a former federal prosecutor, will flip the redrawn seat back to the GOP with his defeat of Democrat Frank Pierce. It was left vacant after Democratic Rep. Wiley Nickel decided not to seek reelection following redistricting.

Tim Moore in North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District: Moore, the state House speaker, will defeat Democrat Pam Genant. The redrawn seat was left vacant after Democratic Rep. Jeff Jackson launched his bid for state attorney general.

Addison McDowell in North Carolina’s 6th District: Because current Rep. Kathy Manning chose not to run for reelection and no Democrat entered the race, McDowell, a lobbyist, was on track to win the district, which was recently redrawn to heavily favor Republicans.

CNN Projection: Arizona voters will approve measure to enshrine the right to abortion in state constitution

Supporters listen during an Arizona for Abortion Access news conference on July 3, 2024, at the Arizona State Capitol.

Arizona voters will approve a measure to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution up to fetal viability, CNN projects.

The win for reproductive rights advocates will expand access to the procedure in the state, which currently bans abortion at 15 weeks into pregnancy. Doctors believe fetus viability to be around 22 to 24 weeks.

Colorado voters will approve measure to enshrine right to abortion in state constitution

Colorado voters will approve a measure to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution, CNN projects.

The procedure remains legal in the state with no gestational limit, but the projected approval of the amendment means public funds can be used toward abortions.

CNN Projection: Democrat Bob Ferguson will win Washington governor’s race

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson is pictured in Seattle on April 27, 2023.

Democrat Bob Ferguson, Washington’s attorney general, will defeat Republican former Rep. David Reichert in the state’s gubernatorial race, CNN projects.

Of the less than a dozen gubernatorial seats up for election this year, Washington was one of the few considered moderately competitive. Still, Democrats were highly favored to win, given the party’s dominance in the state. Ferguson will succeed Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee, who announced last year he would not seek a fourth term.

Ferguson ran on his record as the state’s top lawyer, specifically his work pushing back on policies advanced by the Trump administration. In January 2017, Washington became the first state to sue to block the former president’s immigration ban on several countries with Muslim-majority populations. The attorney general was named one of Time” magazine’s 100 most influential people for his work blocking the ban.

Reichert, meanwhile, leaned on his background in law enforcement and campaigned on reducing crime and homelessness in the state.

Prior to serving in the US House, Reichert spent 33 years working for the sheriff’s department in Seattle’s King County, where he aided in catching the “Green River Killer.” Reichert served as sheriff from 1997 to 2005, when he stepped down after being elected to represent the state’s competitive 8th Congressional District.

CNN Projection: Utah Gov. Spencer Cox will win reelection, CNN projects

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox speaks during a news briefing in Salt Lake City on March 1.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox will win a second term in office, CNN projects.

Cox, a first-term Republican governor, defeated Utah House Minority Leader Brian King, a Democrat, to win reelection.

Cox is the sixth Republican in a row to serve as governor. The last Democratic governor from Utah left office in 1985.

CNN Projection: Democrat Amy Klobuchar will win reelection in Minnesota Senate race

Sen. Amy Klobuchar speaks on stage during the third day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center on August 21 in Chicago.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar will win reelection in her race against Republican Royce White, CNN projects.

The Democrat, who has held the seat since 2007, was the favorite in the Senate race, with polling showing her leading White by double digits.

Klobuchar serves as chair of the Senate Rules Committee as well as chair of the Senate Democratic Steering Committee. Klobuchar, currently in her third term, previously served as the Hennepin County attorney.

CNN Projection: Republicans win control of the Senate

Republicans will win control of the Senate, CNN projects, a victory for the party that has been locked out of the majority in the chamber since 2021.

The outcome paves the way for a new Senate majority leader in the new Congress as longtime Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell has announced plans to step aside to allow for new leadership.

Watch for this key House race as polls close in Alaska

It is 1 a.m. ET and the last polls are now closing in Alaska.

In addition to voting in the presidential contest, there is also a House race to keep an eye on.

One of the candidates is incumbent Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola who was the state’s first woman and native Alaskan to be elected to the House in a 2022 special election to finish the late GOP Rep. Don Young’s term. She was elected for a full term in November 2022.

She was also one of five Democratic House members that represent a district former President Donald Trump carried in 2020 — that makes her seat one of the top targets for Republicans as they look to defend and expand their majority.

Republican Nick Begich, Democrat Eric Hafner and Independent John Wayne Howe are challenging Peltola.

Catch up: Congressional races featuring newly elected members

CNN projects the following races:

Democrat Laura Friedman in California’s 30th District: A state assemblymember, Friedman will replace Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who vacated his seat to run for Senate.

Republican Tony Wied in Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District: The former gas station owner will win a special election for seat left vacant after former Rep. Mike Gallagher, who had chaired the high-profile Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, resigned in April.

Democrat Kelly Morrison in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District: Morrison will win a seat vacated by outgoing Rep. Dean Phillips.

Democrat Luz Rivas in California’s 29th Congressional District: The former electrical engineer will succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Tony Cardenas.
