America’s red shift: See the counties where Trump boosted his share of the vote

(CNN) — A red shift across the country has propelled Donald Trump back into the White House. He won in all seven battleground states, and he turned Democrats’ “blue wall” in the industrial Northeast and Midwest red again.

Capitalizing on frustration at the cost of living and anxiety about the direction of the country, as well as making inroads with traditionally Democratic voting groups, he can claim new support across the country. While some shifts in Trump’s direction were expected, others came in unexpected places.

Data will continue to update and reflect automatically in the graphics below as more 2024 ballots are counted.

Areas with notable shifts
  • 1 Trump turned Long Island red, winning both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
  • 2 Trump padded his margins in many more rural parts of the country, including in states like South Carolina and the battleground of Georgia.
  • 3 Florida is now a red state, and Trump gained support in the southern part of the state. His inroads with Latinos help explains the double-digit swing in Miami-Dade County from four years ago.
  • 4 Trump has promised to close the border with Mexico, and some of his biggest gains were along the Rio Grande, where he saw double-digit gains and won border counties he lost in 2020.

Vote shifts in Alaska are not shown because its election district boundaries changed between 2020 and 2024. Counties are excluded from the map until at least 90% of estimated votes are reported.

Trump’s third run for the White House is likely to deliver his first victory in the popular vote, a feat he achieved by gaining support across the country, including in the Northeast. While he was nowhere near winning his home state of New York, he saw improved margins in much of the state, and especially on Long Island. He also saw unexpected gains in blue states like Virginia and New Jersey. He saw particularly large swings in border counties in Texas and southern Florida.

Swing states all swing right

While Trump gained across the country, it was his improved performance in the seven critical battleground states that won him the White House. He gained votes in different ways while capturing each of them.
