Video shows water gushing from huge breach of Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine
From CNN's Jonny Hallam and Josh Pennington
Drone video emerged late Monday showing a deluge of water gushing from a sizable breach in the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Operational Command South on Tuesday confirmed the dam’s destruction in a post on their official Facebook saying they were assessing the scale of the destruction and calculating likely areas of flooding.
However, the Russian-installed mayor of Nova Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontiev, on Tuesday denied information about the dam collapsing in an interview with Russian state media RIA Novosti, calling it “nonsense.”
The torrent of water seen escaping from the dam in the video has the potential to cause major destruction around Kherson city and other populated areas along the Dnipro River, according to analysts who have been fearing this breach could occur in the fighting.
The flooding could lead to the deaths of thousands of people, according to Russian state media on Tuesday.
The video posted on social media has been geolocated by CNN.
Both Russia and Ukraine have since October 2022 repeatedly accused each of planning to breach the dam using explosives, according to Reuters.
It is impossible to say who is responsible for the damage caused to the dam at this time.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday (local time) that Ukrainian forces carried out a military operation in southern Donetsk on Monday in an attempt to advance, but that the advance was stopped after the Ukrainians suffered “heavy losses.”
On Monday, Ukrainian forces were “hit with a complex weapons strike by the army forces, assault and operational-tactical aviation, missile forces, and artillery, as well as heavy thermobaric systems,” the Russian ministry said Tuesday on its Telegram channel.
The ministry also claimed Russian forces destroyed “28 tanks, including eight main battle Leopard tanks,” and 109 armored fighting vehicles.
CNN could not independently verify the report, and it has reached out to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry for comment and has yet to hear back.

Ukrainian troops are making advances around the eastern city of Bakhmut. Here are the top headlines
From CNN staff

Iryna Rybakova/AP
Ukrainian officials claimed that units had retaken territory on the northern and southern flanks of the embattled eastern city of Bakhmut. Ukraine’s defense minister said units are “carrying out offensive actions” around the city.
Allied countries continue to pledge their support and watch for the looming Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Here’s what to know:
Ukrainian counteroffensive: The Ukrainian offensive is “taking place in several directions” in the eastern part of the country, according to Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar. She and other officials posted a social media video urging silence over any potential news of a counteroffensive in order to protect plans. Meantime, the United States and the rest of the world are watching closely. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said that while Ukraine is “very well prepared” for a counteroffensive against Russia, it is “too early to tell what outcomes are going to happen.”
Fighting in Bakhmut: Ukrainian troops are making advances on the eastern front around the city of Bakhmut, Maliar said. The founder of the Russian private military company Wagner also said Ukrainian Armed Forces have taken back some land north of the city of Bakhmut. In recent weeks, Ukraine has launched successful counteroffensives in the north and south of the city with some success.
Other military actions in eastern Ukraine: The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its troops resisted a “large-scale” attack from Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donetsk region. The Russian military claimed in a statement to have killed 250 Ukrainians and destroyed armored vehicles used in the assault, but provided scant evidence. A Russian rocket attack on a residential area in Balaklia in the Kharkiv region killed one person and injured several others, a local official said.
Fighting spills into Russia: Ukraine has cultivated a network of agents and sympathizers inside Russia working to carry out acts of sabotage against Russian targets, multiple people familiar with US intelligence on the matter told CNN. US officials believe these pro-Ukrainian agents inside Russia carried out a drone attack that targeted the Kremlin in early May by launching drones from within Russia.
Continued Western support: United Kingdom Foreign Secretary James Cleverly reassured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK will continue to back Kyiv. During his visit to the country, Cleverly mentioned things like training Ukrainian pilots on fighter jets, talks of a coalition of Patriot defense systems and banking and economic guarantees. Later, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said groups of Ukrainian pilots have been selected for training in the UK where they will learn to fly modern fighter jets.

Ukrainian pilots selected to train on modern fighter jets in UK, Ukraine's prime minister says
From CNN’s Maria Kostenko and Jo Shelley
Groups of Ukrainian pilots have been selected for training in the UK where they will learn to fly modern fighter jets, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Monday.
In a post on Telegram, Shmyhal said that he had thanked British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who is visiting Kyiv, for, “his leadership in creating the ‘coalition of fighter jets’” that Ukraine is lobbying for – and for, “his commitment to train our pilots,” he said.
His Telegram post had earlier said the pilots were headed to the UK, but it was updated later in the day to say they had been selected for training there.
The UK does not have the US-made F-16 fighter jets that Ukraine wants but said after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit last month that it would give “cohorts of Ukrainian pilots… basic training” that they could “apply [to] a different kind of aircraft.”
US President Joe Biden gave his backing for Kyiv’s pilots to be trained on US-made F-16s at the G7 summit in Japan on May 19. The training has started in several EU countries, the bloc’s High Representative, Josep Borrell, told reporters last month.
Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands are among the countries that have said they will participate in the training. The Netherlands said on May 26 that – despite helping to lead the effort – it had not yet decided whether to deliver the jets to Ukraine.
Correction:This post and headline have been updated to reflect that the pilots have been selected for training in the UK.

President Joe Biden welcomed Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to the White House for an Oval Office bilateral meeting Monday, calling Denmark “one of our greatest allies and most reliable friends.”
The president thanked Frederiksen for meeting his granddaughters during their last visit together, who he said, “are still talking about their meeting with the prime minister,” and wished the PM a happy Constitution Day, noting the Danish holiday, “reflects the fact that we have the same values.”
The subplot to their conversation about Ukraine and transatlantic security is Frederiksen’s next step.
Frederiksen is widely viewed as a potential contender to replace NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who is expected to step down from the post later this year.
The position traditionally goes to a European but would require sign-off by the United States.
Some European diplomats speculate her visit to the White House is an opportunity for Biden and his team to sound her out about the top NATO job.
Frederiksen has said she isn’t currently in the running to head up the military alliance.
“I am not a candidate for the job,” she told reporters in Copenhagen, according to Reuters.
Still, that hasn’t quieted speculation she may be in a leading position to earn Biden’s endorsement for the job.
Other candidates for NATO Secretary General could include Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. Yet the alliance has never previously been led by a woman.
The White House has declined to say whether Biden will discuss the position with Frederiksen on Monday in the Oval Office.
“I’m just not going to get into any speculation as far as that,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said last week.
Instead, White House officials say the two will discuss the war in Ukraine, and Biden’s recent reversal to allow F16 fighter jets into the country as a long-term deterrence to Russian aggression. That conversation will continue Thursday when Biden hosts British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Kyiv pushes back against Russia's claim of resisting a large-scale attack from Ukrainian forces
From CNN's Nathan Hodge, Sebastian Shukla, Olga Voitovych and Sana Noor Haq
Both Ukraine and Russia have engaged in intense information campaigns to sway public opinion and mislead their opponents about their battle plans.
Monday’s announcement from the Russian side was no exception: The Russian military claimed in a statement to have killed 250 Ukrainians and destroyed armored vehicles used in the assault, but provided scant evidence.
A spokesperson for the Ukraine Armed Forces, Bohdan Senyk, told CNN that Ukraine does “not have information” on a purported “large-scale offensive” in Donetsk.
Moscow is known to make inflated claims about Ukrainian losses. CNN has been unable to independently verify the claim.
In a post on its official Telegram feed, the ministry said the assault took place at “five section of the front in the southern Donetsk direction.”
The ministry claimed the goal of the Ukrainian operation was “to break through” Russian defenses in what it considered to be “the most vulnerable area of the front.”
At the time of the attack, Russia’s top general Valery Gerasimov “was at one of the forward command and control posts,” the statement added.

Ukrainian Presidential Press Service/Reuters
The UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said, “Ukraine can count on the UK’s support” while meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Monday, according to the UK foreign office.
Cleverly’s visit to the Ukrainian capital comes ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London late this month, focusing on re-building and bolstering the country’s economic outlook.
Monday’s trip is Cleverly’s second visit to Kyiv and the fourth meeting between UK senior ministers and President Zelensky in recent weeks. Cleverly also met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, on Monday to discuss how to best support Ukraine “from the battlefield to banking guarantees.”
Cleverly also met children who the foreign office say were forcibly deported to Russia.
“Forcibly deporting children, razing cities like Bakhmut, Izium and Mariupol to the ground and committing atrocities are not the acts of a responsible international state. They are the actions of a hostile regime that is in violation of the UN Charter,” Cleverly stated.
Zelensky thanked Cleverly for coming to Kyiv and for the “really big support what UK gave and giving, still giving and we hope will prolong this support to Ukraine.”
“And I want to thank for the last one, it is about opening possibility for training missions for our pilots on fighter jets and also the possibility to open discussion about coalition of Patriots. That is also really important. I am happy that all the leaders understood that during this period of time when we have such big escalation by attacking of different kind of rockets and during all this period when we don’t have fighter jets, we need really something to close the sky. And we understand the name of this something,” Zelensky said.

Fake Putin broadcast aired on Russian radio stations after "hack," Kremlin says
From CNN’s Uliana Pavlova
An “emergency address” supposedly made by President Vladimir Putin that aired on some Russian radio stations on Monday was fake and the broadcast was the result of a “hack,” the Kremlin spokesperson said according to reports in Russian state media.
The “fake” audio message included false claims that “Ukrainian troops have invaded the territory of the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions, martial law has been introduced on the territory of these regions, an order on general mobilization will be signed today, residents of the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions are asked to evacuate deep into Russia,” the Belgorod regional government said.
Some background: Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, has seen a rise in shelling in recent days following an incursion in late May by anti-Putin Russians aligned with the Ukrainian military.
State news agency RIA said “hacking” had also been reported in the Voronezh region today.

Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar has said in a post on the Telegram messaging app that Russia was spreading information about a Ukrainian counteroffensive “to divert attention” from what she said were challenges the invading army faced around Bakhmut in the east.
In Bakhmut – which Maliar said “remained the epicentre” of the fighting – Ukraine is having some “success” as it takes over the “dominant heights” around the city, she claimed.
In her Telegram post, Maliar also said Ukrainian troops are “switching to offensive actions in some directions,” but framed that as part of Ukraine’s overall “defense operation” that began after Russia launched its attempt at a full-scale invasion in February last year.
Earlier Monday, Maliar and other officials posted a social media video urging silence over any potential news of a counteroffensive.

The Biden administration on Monday imposed on “seven leading members of a Russian intelligence-linked malign influence group” for their roles in trying to destabilize the government of Moldova.
According to the US Treasury Department, those who were sanctioned Monday were involved in a plot involving anti-government protests in Moldova earlier this year in an effort “to foment a manufactured insurrection against the Moldovan government.”
The people hit with the sanctions Monday are Konstantin Prokopyevich Sapozhnikov, Yury Yuryevich Makolov, Gleb Maksimovich Khloponin, Svetlana Andreyevna Boyko, Aleksey Vyacheslavovich Losev, Vasily Viktorovich Gromovikov and Anna Travnikova.
In addition, the Treasury Department alleges that the actors sanctioned Monday “are part of a large global information operation connected to the Russian Federation that targets Ukraine, countries bordering Ukraine including Moldova, Balkan countries, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.”
“These actors provoked, trained, and oversaw groups in democratic countries that conduct anti-government protests, rallies, marches, and demonstrations. These malign influence operatives analyze countries vulnerable to exploitation and stoke fears that undermine faith in democratic principles in the targeted countries,” they said.

While Ukraine is “very well prepared” for a counteroffensive against Russia, it is “too early to tell what outcomes are going to happen,” the top US general told CNN Monday.
“They’re in a war that’s an existential threat for the very survival of Ukraine and has greater meaning for the rest of the world — for Europe, really for the United States, but also for the globe,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley said in an in an exclusive interview with CNN in Normandy, France.
Milley, who is retiring this year, is in Normandy to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the 1944 D-Day invasion — a massive World War II operation — as the war continues to rage in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the war has also begun creeping into Russia, as suspected Ukrainian drone strikes hit inside Moscow and a shelling attack was carried out in Belgorod. Asked Monday if such attacks would risk escalating the conflict, Milley said there is “always risk” of escalation, and it’s something the US is watching “very, very carefully.”

It’s mid-afternoon in Kyiv. Here’s what you need to know
From CNN staff
Russian officials have claimed that Ukraine has launched assaults on several fronts. The Ministry of Defense claimed to have repelled what it described as a “large-scale offensive” by Ukrainian forces. Elsewhere, Russian-appointed officials in Zaporizhzhia claimed they are facing intense shelling from Ukrainian forces along the Azov Sea.
Meanwhile, CNN has reported that Kyiv may be working with a network of pro-Ukrainian agents inside Russia to launch drone attacks on Russian targets.
Here are the latest developments:
Offensive in Donetsk: Russia’s defense ministry claimed to have thwarted a “large scale offensive” by Ukrainian forces, which it said was an attempt to break through Russian lines. Russian officials said the assault took place at “five sections of the front in the southern Donetsk direction.” The Ukrainian government has signaled in recent weeks that its troops are preparing to launch a major counteroffensive to reclaim its occupied territories.
Azov Sea strikes: Further south, Russian-appointed officials have also claimed the Ukrainian troops are attempting to break the lines of defense near the Vremivka ledge to reach the Azov Sea coast. Vladimir Rogov, the Russian-installed governor of Zaporizhzhia, said Ukraine launched “Storm Shadow and Tochka-U missiles” in “large quantities” on the region.
Network of saboteurs: Ukraine has cultivated a network of agents and sympathizers inside Russia working to carry out acts of sabotage against Russian targets, multiple people familiar with US intelligence on the matter told CNN. US officials believe these pro-Ukrainian agents inside Russia carried out a drone attack that targeted the Kremlin in early May by launching drones from within Russia.
Belgium rifle investigation: Belgium is investigating the possible use of Belgian-made rifles – donated to Ukraine – by Kyiv-aligned forces on Russian territory. Groups of anti-Putin Russian nationals, aligned with the Ukrainian army, launched a cross-border assault on the Belgorod region in May. Responding to reports that these insurgents used Belgian-made FN SCAR rifles, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said the weapons were provided only “for the defense of Ukrainian territory on Ukrainian territory.”
Chechen leader’s offer: Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said Sunday that he was prepared to send his troops to Belgorod to “deal with” cross-border incursions, following reports of continued fighting in the region. “I would like to remind you that the terrorists who invaded the Belgorod region could be dealt with by the forces of Chechen units,” Kadyrov said in a Telegram post.
US anticipates counteroffensive: The United States believes the highly anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive will result in Kyiv reclaiming “strategically significant territory,” Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria. “We believe that the Ukrainians will meet with success in this counteroffensive,” Sullivan said.

Russia claims to thwart Ukrainian attempt to enter Russian territory
From CNN’s Anna Chernova
The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed to have thwarted an attempt by Ukrainian forces to enter the Russian territory near Novaya Tavolzhanka in the bordering Belgorod region.
“Yesterday [Sunday], units of the Armed Forces and the Border Service of the FSB of Russia thwarted an attempt by two groups of Ukrainian terrorists to penetrate the territory of the Belgorod region near the settlement of Novaya Tavolzhanka, Belgorod region,” the ministry said in a statement Monday.
The statement claims that on Sunday at approximately 1 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET), the two unnamed groups tried to “force the Seversky Donets River and land on the outskirts of the Novaya Tavolzhanka settlement in the Belgorod Region under the cover of intensive artillery shelling of civilian targets.”
The formations were destroyed by air strikes and artillery fire from the cover units of the state border, the ministry added.
CNN cannot independently verify Russia’s claims.
This follows Belgorod region Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov saying a Ukrainian “sabotage and reconnaissance group” entered the territory of Shebekino in the Belgorod region. “Ukrainian terrorists wanted to cross the river near the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka, but our servicemen stopped them,” he added.

Airlines CEOs at the International Air Transport Association Annual General meeting have told CNN that they don’t expect any changes to Russian airspace restrictions any time in the foreseeable future.
He added that for Russian air space to reopen, the war would have to end with peace in Ukraine.
Russian airspace bordering Ukraine has been closed to all commercial airlines since the start of the invasion.
Not being able to fly over Russia has made the journey from Europe to Asia two to three hours longer, AirFrance KLM CEO Benjamin Smith said.
“So a plane that could have been optimal before this war in Ukraine started may not be the case today,” he added.
When asked if he was writing off flying over Russia for the foreseeable future, he replied: “That is our assumption.”

Ukrainian troops are trying to reach the Azov Sea, Russian-installed governor says
From CNN’s Olga Voitovych in Kyiv
A Russian-appointed official in Zaporizhzhia has told Russian state media that Ukrainian troops are attempting to break the defense line near the Vremivka ledge to reach the Azov Sea coast.
He added that Ukrainian troops have increased the intensity of the shelling, including the use of Storm Shadows missiles.
Rogov said he didn’t think a full-scale counteroffensive had begun. According to RIA Novosti, he is said to believe the Ukrainians are assessing the line of defense and the readiness of the Russian forces.
Storm Shadow missiles: The Storm Shadow is a long-range cruise missile with stealth capabilities, jointly developed by the United Kingdom and France, with a firing range in excess of 250 kilometers (155 miles).
The UK delivered “multiple” Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine in May. British defense secretary Ben Wallace told CNN that Ukraine had “successfully” used these missiles “to defend their country.”

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have repelled what it described as a “large scale offensive” by Ukrainian forces, saying it thwarted an attempt to break through Russian lines.
In a statement Monday, the Russian military claims to have killed 250 Ukrainians and destroyed armored vehicles used in this assault.
The Russian military is known for making inflated claims about Ukrainian losses and provided no evidence to back up its claim. CNN has also not been able to independently verify the claim.

Belgium said investigations are underway into the possible use of Belgian-made rifles – donated to Ukraine – by Kyiv-aligned forces on Russian territory.
“Defense and the defense intelligence services have started an investigation,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo told VRT’s Radio 1 morning show.
The Washington Post first reported that forces aligned with Ukraine carried Belgian-made FN SCAR rifles during an incursion in Russia’s Belgorod region. Ukraine says it was not directly involved in the attacks, which have been claimed by Russian volunteer groups opposed to the current government in Moscow.
“What we know for sure is that the rules for the supply of our weapons are very strict,” De Croo said on Monday.
“And so we monitor compliance with those rules very strictly.”
Some background: In May, a group of anti-Putin Russian nationals, who are aligned with the Ukrainian army, claimed responsibility for an attack in Russia’s southwestern region of Belgorod, which borders northeastern Ukraine.
On Sunday, the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom for Russia Legion claimed they had captured Russian soldiers and demanded a meeting with the governor of Belgorod.
The groups are not officially part of Ukraine’s military but fight under Ukrainian command. They have made several recent incursions in Belgorod that have helped bring the war to Russian soil.

Ostorozhno Novosti/Reuters
Ukraine has cultivated a network of agents and sympathizers inside Russia working to carry out acts of sabotage against Russian targets and has begun providing them with drones to stage attacks, multiple people familiar with US intelligence on the matter told CNN.
US officials believe these pro-Ukrainian agents inside Russia carried out a drone attack that targeted the Kremlin in early May by launching drones from within Russia rather than flying them from Ukraine into Moscow.
It is not clear whether other drone attacks carried out in recent days – including one targeting a residential neighborhood near Moscow and another strike on oil refineries in southern Russia – were also launched from inside Russia or conducted by this network of pro-Ukrainian operatives.
But US officials believe that Ukraine has developed sabotage cells inside Russia made up of a mix of pro-Ukrainian sympathizers and operatives well-trained in this kind of warfare. Ukraine is believed to have provided them with Ukrainian-made drones, and two US officials told CNN there is no evidence that any of the drone strikes have been conducted using US-provided drones.
Officials could not say conclusively how Ukraine has managed to get the drones behind enemy lines, but two of the sources told CNN that it has established well-practiced smuggling routes that could be used to send drones or drone components into Russia where they could then be assembled.

The devices did not detonate and the area has been cordoned off, Shapsha added.

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Sunday claimed it had foiled a “large-scale offensive” from Ukrainian forces on the front line in the eastern Donetsk region.
The attack involved Ukrainian troops, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and armored combat vehicles, according to a statement from the ministry.
It comes after Ukrainian forces claimed they had achieved two small victories in the country’s east, including an advance of 400 meters (1,300 feet) toward the strategically important town of Svatove in Donetsk.
Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, a Russia-appointed official in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region claimed Russian forces had repelled a Ukrainian attack there. The Ukrainian military did not refer to any fighting in Zaporizhzhia in its daily update Sunday and has urged silence over any counteroffensive plans.
Chechen warning: Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov on Sunday offered to send his troops to Belgorod region to “deal with” cross-border incursions. “I would like to remind you that the terrorists who invaded the Belgorod region could be dealt with by the forces of Chechen units,” Kadyrov said in in a Telegram post. The remarks from Kadyrov, a Putin ally, come after the head of Russia’s Wagner group claimed Saturday that attacks in Belgorod were “a clear attempt to capture that area.”
Zelensky’s gratitude: In his daily address Saturday, the Ukrainian President thanked more than a dozen troops by name and asked that Ukrainians take time to do the same with individual soldiers. Among those Zelensky name-checked were troops on the front lines or battling to control the skies above them — the fighters that would be particularly key in the counteroffensive that Kyiv is expected to launch.
Washington’s view: President Joe Biden’s national security adviser said the US believes the Ukrainian counteroffensive will result in Kyiv taking back “strategically significant territory.” Speaking to CNN, Jake Sullivan added that developments on the battlefield will also have a “major impact” on any future peace negotiations.
Deadly strike: Rescue workers have recovered the body of a 2-year-old girl from the rubble of a building hit by a Russian strike Saturday on the small riverfront town of Pidhorodne in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, a Ukrainian military official said. Twenty-two people were wounded in the attack, including five children.

Russia claims it foiled Ukrainian "large-scale offensive" in Donetsk
From CNN's Josh Pennington
Russia’s Defense Ministry on Sunday claimed it had repelled a “large-scale offensive” from Ukrainian forces on the front line in the eastern Donetsk region.
The attack in the south of the region involved Ukrainian troops, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and armored combat vehicles, according to a statement from the ministry.
CNN has not been able to independently confirm details of this attack.
The report from the Russian Defense Ministry comes amid speculation that Ukraine’s much-anticipated counteroffensive, which has seemed imminent for weeks, could be launched in the coming days.
Despite clear signs the counteroffensive is coming, Ukrainian officials have not provided any specific date for when it will begin.
Fight for the Donbas: Donetsk and neighboring Luhansk make up Ukraine’s Donbas region, an industrial heartland when Russian-backed separatists seized control of two territories and declared breakaway republics in 2014. Shortly before the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the two separatist territories as independent states, ordering the deployment of Russian troops there in defiance of international law.

Ukrainian soldiers call for silence on counteroffensive in social media video
From CNN's Josh Pennington
Ukraine’s military is urging silence over any news of an expected counteroffensive in a video shared on social media by officials.
The video shows several soldiers in full combat gear from different Ukrainian units putting their index finger to their lips, signaling silence, and saying: “Shhh.”
Despite clear signs that a long-anticipated counteroffensive is coming, Ukrainian officials have not provided any specific date for when it will begin.
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked more than a dozen troops by name and asked that Ukrainians take time to do the same with individual soldiers. Among those Zelensky name-checked were troops on the front lines or battling to control the skies above them — the fighters that would be particularly key in the counteroffensive.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Sunday offered to send his troops to the Belgorod region to “deal with” cross-border incursions as the war spills onto Russian territory.
Belgorod, a western Russian province that borders Ukraine, has seen an uptick in violence in recent weeks. Belgorod’s governor said in a video posted Sunday that shelling had been reported as Russian dissident groups fighting under Ukrainian command ramp up pressure there.
Those groups, the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom for Russia Legion, also claim to have captured Russian soldiers in Belgorod.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used his daily address Saturday to thank troops on the front lines or battling to control the skies above them — the fighters that would be particularly key in the counteroffensive that Kyiv is expected to soon launch.
Zelensky typically thanks specific units in his speeches, but yesterday he name-checked more than a dozen individuals, among them commanders, gunners, marines and infantrymen.
The president ended his speech by calling upon all Ukrainians to personally thank servicemen and servicewomen.
Concerns over aerial superiority: Zelensky’s address comes amid continuing speculation that Ukraine’s much-anticipated counteroffensive, which has seemed imminent for weeks, could be launched in the coming days. The Ukrainian leader said Kyiv is ready to carry out the operation in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Saturday.
Last month, Zelensky said Ukraine needed a “bit more time” — likely to allow for the delivery of more Western military aid, including much-needed air defense systems.
Zelensky has spent months lobbying Western powers to provide Ukraine with fighter jets and weapons to help control the skies, as they would help limit the number of casualties to Ukrainian fighters during any potential counteroffensive.
In his interview with the Journal, Zelensky acknowledged that Russia retains aerial superiority on the front lines. He said a lack of protection from Russian air power meant “a large number of soldiers will die.”

Dissident Russian military units say they'll hand over captured soldiers to Ukraine
The Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom for Russia Legion had demanded a meeting with the governor of Belgorod, the Russian border region where they said they captured the fighters. But, despite appearing to express openness to the meeting, the groups claim Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov was a no-show for a parley.
According to a video update from the Russian Volunteer Corps, the groups have now decided to hand the captured soldiers over “to the Ukrainian side for the exchange procedure.”
The Russian Volunteer Corps claimed they have “more captured soldiers now,” without mentioning how many.
CNN cannot independently verify the dissident groups’ claims.
About the anti-Kremlin Russian fighters: The Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom for Russia Legion are not officially part of Ukraine’s military but fight under Ukrainian command. They have made several recent incursions in Belgorod that have helped bring the war to Russian soil.

Ukrainian soccer star Oleksandr Zinchenko says his first trip back to his home country since the Russian invasion has been hard to comprehend.
The 26-year-old Arsenal star has been forced to watch from afar as devastation spread across Ukraine but he has continued to use his platform to raise awareness of his country’s plight.
Despite playing multiple times for his national team since the war started, the defender had been unable to return home amid the busy Premier League fixture list but with the English soccer season having now ended he has been able to witness the reality of war first hand.
Motivated by making a difference, Zinchenko recently became an ambassador of UNITED 24 — a fundraising organization set up by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — and is fronting an initiative to rebuild a school, alongside legendary Ukrainian former soccer star Andriy Shevchenko.
The pair have organized a charity match which will be played at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium in London on August 5, with proceeds going towards the rebuilding project.
US believes Ukraine's counteroffensive will see Kyiv take back "strategically significant territory"
From CNN's Sam Fossum
The United States believes the highly anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive will result in Kyiv taking back “strategically significant territory,” Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria.
Asked if this meant he expected some form of negotiations by the end of this year, Sullivan wouldn’t provide any sort of timetable but said that developments on the battlefield will have a “major impact” on any future negotiation.
“But what I will say is this: President Zelensky himself has said that this war will end ultimately through diplomacy,” Sullivan said.
Western help: Ukraine has delayed its counteroffensive as it awaits the arrival of Western military aid, including modern battle tanks.
Ukrainian forces have already begun training on US Abrams tanks and US officials have previously said they are working to speed up delivery to the battlefield.
Though the US had originally said it would send the newer M1A2 versions of the tanks, officials said in March that the Ukrainians would instead get the M1A1, dramatically accelerating the timeline for their delivery.
In January, Russia’s ambassador to the United States said in a statement that Russian forces would destroy US-made M1 Abrams tanks and other NATO military equipment if they are supplied to Ukraine.
