New Jersey hip hop stars close out the VMAs

You down with NJHH?

That’s New Jersey hip hop whose stars paid homage to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards held in Newark, New Jersey.

First off, who even knew Ice T was from Jersey?

The rapper and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star introduced fellow Garden State natives Fetty Wap, Naughty by Nature, Wyclef Jean, Lords of the Underground, Redman and — of course — Queen Latifah.

The group closed out the awards show and naturally shut.it.down.

Thus ends the 2019 MTV VMAs.

Hip hop hooray!

Twitter thinks Normani won the VMAs

Is Normani the “new Beyonce?”

That seems to come up every time the former Fifth Harmony member performs.

With her rock hard abs, dance moves and singing chops, some people can’t help but make the comparison.

Mind you WE aren’t saying it, so don’t come for us Hive.

Normani did slay her performance of “Motivation” tonight and social media took note.

Marc Jacobs becomes first-ever recipient of the MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award

MTV's moon man and fashion designer Marc Jacobs attend the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on Aug. 26, 2019 in Newark, New Jersey.

Marc Jacobs paid tribute to MTV while accepting the Fashion Trailblazer Award tonight.

He went on to explain how MTV taught him how to “see music I listened to and love.”

“You gave artists a platform to express their music and ideas through moving image, and me, a dynamic source of inspiration,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs is the first-ever recipient of the MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award.

The Jonas Brothers are living "the Jersey dream"

Vincent Pastore you owe Jamie-Lynn Sigler $20.

The two “Sopranos” stars joined fellow cast member Drea de Matteo to present the VMA for best pop video in honor of the hit HBO series 20th anniversary.

HBO is owned by CNN’s parent company.

Pastore offered the cash to Sigler if she announced the Jonas Brothers as the winners.

And she did.

The trio thanked their fans and Joe Jonas noted “to get this award from the ‘Sopranos,’ it’s a Jersey dream.”

John Travolta at least knows himself

You have to love John Travolta.

While presenting the video of the year award with Queen Latifah, Travolta said, “I shouldn’t do this because I’ll just mispronounce s**t and f**k it up,” before handing the envelope to her.

For those who don’t remember, the superstar famously mispronounced Tony Award-winning actress/singer Idina Menzel on the Oscars stage as “Adele Dazeem.”

Oops.

And while he didn’t mispronounce Taylor Swift’s name when she won the VMA tonight, the internet still thinks he flubbed it by attempting to give the award to a member of her entourage instead of her.

Maybe he was kidding around?

Miley's breakup anthem is even sadder than we thought

We will resist the temptation to say that Miley Cyrus was giving full on revenge body with her little black dress tonight.

She performed “Slide Away,” a tune that seems to have special meaning when you consider she released it soon after breaking up with husband Liam Hemsworth.

Watching Cyrus belt it out, surrounded by musicians, on a stage shot in black and white, just felt…forlorn.

She turned it out though and her parents were in the audience cheering her own.

It felt right that immediately after her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, won song of the year with Lil Nas X for “Old Town Road.”

Taylor Swifts wins video of the year

Taylor Swift thanked fans for supporting her as she took home the video of year award for “You need to calm down.”

Swift noted that fans select the category winner.

“I first want to say, ‘Thank you’ to the fans because in this video several points were made, so you voting for this video means that you want a world, where we’re all treated equally under the law,” she said.

She also thanked fans for signing a petition, which was featured at the end of her video and called for the Equality Act.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello turn up the heat in New Jersey

If they haven’t been having a summer romance, they need to.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello turned up the heart for the performance of their hit single “Señorita.”

The pair have not confirmed chatter that they are a couple, but wowzers they did a good job playing one during that song.

There was plenty of “will they or won’t they kiss” moments and we did get Cabello rubbing noses with Mendes at the very end at least.

We ship them SO HARD.

Missy Elliott has been the future since the past

Watching Missy Elliott kill it on the stage at the VMAs was just a reminder of how innovative the singer/rapper/producer has been since the 1990s.

She worked it out to a medley of hits, including “Get Your Freak On” and “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” in her out of this world outfits. It was a blast from the past and a look at where the music industry needs to go.

As Cardi B noted while presenting her the Video Vanguard Award, Elliott is “the voice we need.”

Her win was greeted with a standing ovation and chants of “Missy, Missy!”

She thanked everyone from her mom to the late singer Aaliyah.

Way to be humble, flip it and reverse it Missy!

Taylor Swift gives mic to team for video for good win

Taylor Swift may have taken home the award, but she let the folks she made the video for and with enjoy the spotlight.

After Swift snagged the video for good award for her LGBTQ anthem “You Need to Calm Down,” she took to the stage with some of the community who co-starred in it with her.

Her best friend singer/dancer/social media star Todrick Hall accepted the award and talked about growing up in the small town of Plainview, Texas, where he said all he ever wanted was “to be Ariel from ‘The Little Mermaid.’”

Hall served as co-executive producer for the video.

“My friend Todrick is one of those people who is very generous with his effort and time, he would never ask for credit when he deserves it,” People reported Swift as saying in some behind the scenes footage of the making of the video. “He has put so much into this video, whether it was casting or ideas or fashion, and you know, logistics. He’s basically booked half of this video.”

Jersey's own Jonas Brothers bring it

We are suckers for you Jo Bros.

Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas, also known as the Jonas Brothers, performed “Sucker” and “Only Human” from Asbury Park, New Jersey.

They started indoors at the Stone Pony before strolling outside through throngs of screaming fans to take to the stage at the Asbury Park waterfront.

They are natives of Wyckoff, New Jersey.

From one hot girl to another: We see you Megan Thee Stallion and Lizzo

This has officially been the “hot girl summer” and that was on display at tonight’s VMAs.

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion introduced singer Lizzo and they both had the crowd going nuts.

If you have been out of the loop Megan is THEE hot raptress who coined the whole “hot girl summer” thing this year.

And Lizzo has been burning up stages and charts as well.

The singer gave a little taste of her hit “Truth Hurts” before she launched into her song “Good As Hell.”

In typical Lizzo fashion, she gave both all the notes and all the body.

We do, so allow us to suggest a joint Lizzo and Megan tour?

The pair already linked up for an epic Instagram post.

Rapper French Montana brings up immigration: "I feel like we are the people that make this country"

Rapper French Montana took a moment tonight to address his thoughts on immigration before presenting tonight’s award for best Latin.

Montana, who is from Morocco, went on to describe the nominees as immigrants and urged the audience to “check them out.”

The award went to Rosalía and J Balvin for “Con Altura.”

Try not to act like a teen when Shawn Mendes performs — we dare you

SHRIEK!!

Shawn Mendes is bae.

Don’t believe it? Stroll over to Twitter and peep the reaction to his performance of “If I Can’t Have You” on the VMAs.

The audience was totally into it as well.

Seriously, he’s adorbs and what a summer he’s been having, with his hit single “Señorita” with Camila Cabello whom he appears to be…close to.

“You know I could look like that. All I need is a little botox, some gym time and different parents,” host Sebastian Maniscalco joked after Mendes left the stage.

Sebastian Maniscalco feels real Jersey, but he's not

Sebastian Maniscalco, the host of this year’s VMAs, felt as New Jersey as the shore, but actually he was born in Illinois.

The L.A.-based comedian had plenty to say about Jersey, where the awards show was held, in his opening monologue.

“We’re celebrating music the way it always was intended,” he said. “In a hockey rink in the middle off Newark.”

He also poked some fun at social media and influencers.

His opening was followed by Cardi B winning the first award of the night for best hip hop.

Taylor Swift opens VMAs with all the rainbows

lor Swift continued her support of the LGBTQ community and all things colorful with her MTV VMAs opening performance.

Drag performers and voguers joined her as she replicated a bit of her music video for “You Need To Calm Down” complete with the beach chairs.

That was before she donned a jacket and grabbed her guitar to sing her ballad “Lover.”

It was the first time Swift had performed since dropping her new album. Earlier she said on Instagram that she’d be gifting viewers with not one, but two songs.

Billboard reported that some of the drag performers, who joined Swift on stage, also performed with Miley Cyrus on the VMAs in 2015.

Here's who is performing at the VMAs tonight

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards, along with Lizzo, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Lil Nas X and Rosalía, MTV announced.

Cabello released her debut solo album, “CAMILA,” in January 2018 to rave reviews. She took home artist of the year and video of the year at the 2018 VMAs.

Mendes recently released two new singles, “If I Can’t Have You” and his collaboration with Cabello, “Senorita.”

Lizzo has been charting around the world with “Juice,” “Good As Hell” and “Tempo,” featuring Missy Elliott.

Bad Bunny, originally from Puerto Rico, is one of the top Latin urban artists of the moment and one of the pioneers of the Latin Trap movement.

Balvin, originally from Medellin, Colombia, is one of the top streaming music artists in the world.

Lil Nas X is known for the song of the year, “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.

Rosalía is making a global splash with her hit interpretations of flamenco music.

Normani's abs though...

Let’s take a moment to recognize why folks were going crazy over Normani. She is showing OUT on the VMAs red carpet.

The “Motivation” singer gave us plenty of that to get into the gym.

Twitter thought so too.

And oh yeah, there’s an awards show tonight, too.

US soccer players Alex Morgan, Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris are presenting tonight

United States' forward Alex Morgan (L) and United States' defender Ali Krieger celebrate with the trophy after the France 2019 Womens World Cup football final match between USA and the Netherlands on July 7, 2019.

Tonight’s presenters include Ice-T, John Travolta, Rick Ross, Salt-N-Pepa, Jonathan Van Ness from Netflix’s “Queer Eye” and US soccer players Alex Morgan, Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris.

There will also be a mini reunion of stars from “The Sopranos.” Actors Drea De Matteo, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Vincent Pastore are presenting. Perhaps this is a nod to the event’s New Jersey setting? Perhaps it will double as a plug for the HBO show’s upcoming prequel movie?
