The Golden Globes so far: 5 of the opening 7 awards went to people of color
From CNN's Brian Lowry
Five of the opening seven awards to performers went to people of color, including Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan for the sci-fi comedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the Marvel sequel. Both films were broadly popular, as opposed to more narrowly skewed art-house fare.
Honored for his comeback role after a long acting hiatus, Quan expressed gratitude to Steven Spielberg, who cast him as a child in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” a nominee this year for directing his autobiographical movie “The Fabelmans.” Bassett spoke of the late Chadwick Boseman, and how the movies were part of his legacy.
Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams were also recognized for the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” the rare series on a broadcast network to make inroads in the awards arena.
Consisting of international journalists, the HFPA has traditionally favored European talent. Colin Farrell won best actor in a musical or comedy for “The Banshees of Inisherin.”

The Golden Globes are back on NBC. For how long remains to be seen
From CNN's Brian Lowry
After a history punctuated by dysfunction and scandal, the Golden Globes struck a TV deal with NBC in the 1990s that solidified their place as a major TV and awards event. Now, after another controversy drove the ceremony off the air in 2022, the Globes return to NBC Tuesday for an 80th anniversary dogged by questions as to how diluted and damaged the brand might be.
The latest troubles began almost two years ago, in February 2021, when the Los Angeles Times published a detailed story documenting the lack of Black members within the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which presents the awards, and potential ethical transgressions related to its then-roster of 87 international journalists.
The HFPA was thrown into crisis mode, with Hollywood figures distancing themselves from the ceremony. In response, a group of publicists called upon the HFPA to implement “profound and lasting change” for its “pervasive practice of discriminatory behavior, unprofessionalism, ethical impropriety and alleged financial corruption.”
In their letter, the publicists added that they could not advise their clients to take part in the Globes without the organization addressing those concerns.
NBC dropped the broadcast that May. Tom Cruise announced that he would return his three Globe trophies. By August, the HFPA laid out plans for a series of reforms that included expanding its roster of voting members and pledging to bring more people of color into the body.
Since then, skepticism has lingered about the HFPA’s progress, and whether studios, publicists and high-profile stars would return after a non-televised ceremony was rather quietly held last year.

Diversity and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association: Here's what to know about the controversy
From CNN's Sandra Gonzalez
The Golden Globes are back – after controversy kept the awards off the air last year.
Last year’s event was untelevised after NBC temporarily ended its decades-long relationship amid mounting questions over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity and ethical questions related to financial benefits given to some members, stemming from a Los Angeles Times investigation.
In September, when it was announced that the show would be returning to NBC, a press release at the time stated that it would be a one-year agreement.
During the 2022 event, the HFPA did address the criticism stemming from its lack of Black members in the organization.
Since then, the HFPA has added 103 new voters in recent months and has touted that its voting body is “now 52% female” and “51.5% racially and ethnically diverse.”

Analysis: This could be a good time for the Globes to do away with gendered categories
Analysis from CNN's Dan Heching
Emma Corrin arrives at the Governors Awards in 2022.
(Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)
If anyone is looking for a fresh start in the new year, it’s the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The organization responsible for putting on the Golden Globes is back in full force this year, after an unwelcome hiatus that saw the 2022 edition of the awards miss a telecast. It came after the HFPA was accused in 2021 of being a largely and homogeneously White organization sorely lacking in diversity.
Efforts have been made to make progress in the time since, as the Globes try to rebrand as an award show that’s finally of this century.
The conversation about getting rid of gendered categories in performance awards is far from new: Actors such as Emma Corrin, who won a Golden Globe in 2021 for their role as Princess Diana in “The Crown,” have contributed to the sentiment.
Aside from being forward-thinking, following suit would be a smart move for the Golden Globes as it is one of the few events to cover both the film and TV mediums, thereby creating an overwhelming multitude of acting categories in limited series, regular series, as well as films, along with the same in supporting acting categories.Practically speaking, removing gendered categories would be a time saver – something audiences always appreciate when it comes to bloated-feeling award shows.
But, more importantly, it would be a step away from an increasingly archaic way of looking at art and artists and an invitation to performers from all mediums to freely be themselves and still have an opportunity to get recognized.

The Golden Globes moved from Sunday to Tuesday this year — Here's why
It’s Tuesday night and stars are arriving to the Golden Globes.
But — that is unusual. The Globes are not typically held on a Tuesday. Historically, the show has been set for a Sunday in early January.
The change of date this year is because of NBC’s busy schedule. The network agreed to put the Globes back on its airwaves in 2023 after dropping the broadcast in 2022 following controversy around the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The Globes couldn’t be on Sunday, Jan. 8, because of Sunday Night Football. The NFL extended its regular season in 2021. However, because NBC was not airing the Golden Globes last year, there wasn’t a conflict. And in 2021, the show was postponed and presented virtually in February because of the pandemic.
Here's why Brendan Fraser says he's not attending the Golden Globes despite being a nominee

Brendan Fraser, who has garnered considerable awards buzz (and a Golden Globe nomination) for his starring turn in “The Whale,” says he doesnot plan on attending this year’s Globes ceremony, citing his “history” with the organization.
Fraser is seemingly referring to the 2018 allegations the actor made against the former president of the HFPA, Philip Berk, whom he alleges groped him at an event in 2003.
After Fraser’s allegations, the HFPA released a statement that saidit was “investigating further details surrounding the incident” and that it “stands firmly against sexual harassment.”
Behind the scenes, Fraser claimed to GQ, the organization ultimately came back to him and proposed issuing a joint statement that said, according to him,“Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.”
Berk confirmed to CNN that a joint statement had been presented to Fraser and that it was a summary of an independent investigation commissioned by the HFPA. Ultimately, it was released as a statement by the group without Fraser’s co-signature.
Berk also reasserted his opposition to Fraser’s accusation, calling it “absurd.”
After Fraser’s allegations, Berk remained an active member of the HFPA until 2021, when he was expelled for disseminating an article to fellow HFPA members that referred to Black Lives Matter as a “racist hate movement.”
Further HFPA controversy: The Golden Globes, long considered the lead-up to the Oscars, also came under fire in 2021 after it was revealed by the Los Angeles Times that the association contained no Black voting members.
Carmichael rose to fame in the 2014 comedy film, “Neighbors.” Later that same year, he released his first HBO stand-up comedy special, “Love at the Store,” directed by Spike Lee.
Most recently he made his directorial debut with “On the Count of Three,” in which he starred, along with Tiffany Haddish, J. B. Smoove, Lavell Crawford and Henry Winkler.
This year’s Globes ceremony comes back on air after last year’s event was untelevised. NBC temporarily ended its decades-long relationship amid mounting questions over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity and ethical questions.
In September, when it was announced that the show would be returning to NBC, a press release at the time stated that it would be a one-year agreement.

The controversy: NBC temporarily ended its decades-long relationship with the Globes at this time last year amid mounting questions over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lack of diversity and ethical questions related to financial benefits given to some members. In September, when it was announced that the show would be returning to NBC, a news release at the time stated that it would be a one-year agreement. The HFPA has in recent months added 103 new voters and has touted that its voting body is “now 52% female” and “51.5% racially and ethnically diverse.”

Here's what the weather forecast looks like as stars start to arrive to the red carpet

The Golden Globes have been working to keep its red carpet dry as rain soaked the Beverly Hills, California, area ahead of the show. The show is held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles — an area that has been threatened by extreme flooding caused by a series of storms hitting the West Coast in recent days.
But there is a glimmer of hope: After getting hammered with heavy rain from late Monday into Tuesday, Southern California is beginning to see a break. Isolated showers are still possible in the next few hours, but hopefully the Globes will be able to dodge them in Beverly Hills.
The show will go on, rain or shine. The Globes tweeted a preview of the red carpet, showing a tent over the entire thing to make sure everyone stays dry.
Across California: More rain is dropping across the state Tuesday, threatening more flooding and disruption as part of a parade of storms that have forced thousands to evacuate and prompted dozens of rescues in recent days and left more than 16 dead in recent weeks.
More than 20 million Californians – which is about 10% of the US population – are under flood alerts as the risk of mudslides also spreads to the Los Angeles and San Diego areas.
