It has now been more than 1,000 days since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the conflict escalated Thursday when Russia launched a new non-nuclear ballistic missile on Ukraine’s Dnipro region.
At least three people were injured in the attack, the head of the Dnipro’s military administration said. A number of buildings were also damaged.
The launch of the medium-range missile comes during a tense week in the war. Both US and British/French-made missiles were fired into Russia by Ukraine, after US President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission to use longer-range American missiles across the border.
In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin updated Russia’s nuclear doctrine, with the Kremlin saying the revised military doctrine would in theory lower the bar for first use of nuclear weapons.
Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then several Ukrainian towns and cities have been obliterated by the fighting, essentially altering the country’s landscape.
Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.
