Four years after losing the presidency, Donald Trump won it back in Tuesday’s election.
The Republican nominee, who served from 2017-2021, defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to complete a historic political comeback. He is just the second president in history to win a nonconsecutive term.
“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” Trump said at an election-night event in West Palm Beach, Florida. “This will truly be the golden age of America.”
Trump’s victory comes in the same year that he was convicted of a felony and escaped two attempts on his life. In July, Trump was shot in the ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Harris, the nation’s first female vice president, was hoping to shatter a nearly 250-year-old glass ceiling to become the nation’s first female president. She became the Democratic Party’s nominee this summer, not long after Joe Biden’s unprecedented exit from the race.
“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” she said in her concession speech Wednesday. “But hear me when I say: The light of America’s promise will always burn bright.”
