US Rep. Liz Cheney has lost her primary to a candidate supported by former President Donald Trump, CNN projects. Harriet Hageman will win the Republican nomination in Wyoming's House race, defeating Cheney.
Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. She has since been outspoken about Trump's election lies, highlighting a rift in the party.
Cheney was defiant when faced with criticism from inside her own party and was eventually removed from her position as chair of the House Republican Conference in May 2021. "I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former President's crusade to undermine our democracy," Cheney said on the House floor the night before she was stripped of her title. House Republicans voted Rep. Elise Stefanik to the No. 3 leadership position after ousting Cheney.
In September 2021, Cheney was given the vice chair position on the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Within a week, former Trump had endorsed her primary challenger.
Cheney ultimately conceded that she'd lost the Republican primary for Wyoming's at-large House seat to Hageman.
"I called her to concede the race," Cheney said. "This primary election is over. But now, the real work begins."
Cheney is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, and since 2017, she has represented the same congressional seat in Wyoming that her dad once held. Earlier in her career, she practiced law and held various positions in the US State Department.
