As President Donald Trump tries to move forward with the construction of additional physical barriers along the southern border, his administration has had to contend with a slew of lawsuits, some of which have thrown a wrench into the President’s plans.

In late May, a federal judge in California blocked Trump from tapping into Defense Department funds to build parts of the US-Mexico border wall. The Trump administration appealed the block to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals and in the interim, asked the district court to allow building to continue pending appeal. The district court denied the administration’s request.

One case challenging Trump’s national emergency declaration, however, has been dismissed, while others still haven’t been decided. The argument at the core of each lawsuit is similar: Trump exceeded his authority and circumvented Congress in an attempt to achieve his signature campaign promise for an emergency that, plaintiffs argue, doesn’t exist.
