Carol Burnett, a groundbreaking actress and comedian, has been entertaining American audiences since the late 1950s.

She is perhaps best known for her variety show "The Carol Burnett Show," which originally ran from 1967 to 1978. But she also has had many other roles in television, film and theater.

"For more than 50 years, comedy trailblazer Carol Burnett has been breaking barriers while making us laugh," said Meher Tatna, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, when she introduced a new Golden Globe Award in Burnett's honor a few years ago. "She was the first woman to host a variety sketch show, 'The Carol Burnett Show.' She was also the first woman to win both the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and Kennedy Center Honors."

Burnett has won five Golden Globes — and many more awards — over a career that has spanned seven decades.
