I'm unemployed and hopeless

There's only so much rejection a person can take. Meet 5 unemployed Americans who want to work, but are beyond fed up with the weak job market and feel hopeless.

Too young to retire, too old to get a job

  • Name: Max Kahn, 53
  • Hometown: Cumming, Georgia

I was a senior manager at NCR Corporation, and after I worked for them for 24 years, I was laid off in April 2010.

I applied for thousands of jobs, without limitations. I was willing to relocate. I was even willing to go overseas. I had a couple interviews here and there, but nothing really happened.

Now, it's been more than a year since I've searched for a job. I unsubscribed myself from Careerbuilder and Monster.com because I was so sick and tired of getting daily emails which never pan out.

My wife is a teacher, and we're relying on her income. I've also withdrawn money from my 401(k) and paid the penalties. Somehow we must continue marching on. Then again, I don't claim to be a Bill Gates. Eventually this will run out.

I don't look for a job. I just don't have it in me. I'm too old to start an entry-level job and I'm too young to retire. I am basically one of those millions who are not counted in the unemployment rate, because I'm simply not part of the game.
