Steve George is Vice President of News, Asia-Pacific. In this role he leads editorial strategy across platforms for international and domestic news, as part of CNN’s global, 24/7 management team.
During his time at CNN, George has led editorial teams through historic breaking news and key regional pursuits, helping spearhead coverage of the Covid-19 outbreak, the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, the Sri Lanka Easter bombings, the Christchurch massacre, and the Thai cave rescue.
More recently, George has led coverage of Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s consolidation of power and the global effects of China’s rise; the war in Ukraine, for which he received an Emmy Award for his role in CNN’s coverage of Russia’s initial invasion; and the Middle East crisis.
George is also the founding editor of CNN’s Meanwhile in China newsletter, a weekly analysis of Chinese society, politics, and foreign policy for a global readership.
Based at CNN’s regional headquarters in Hong Kong, George was previously Executive Editor for CNN Digital Worldwide, Asia-Pacific, and before that, Asia-Pacific Digital Director, and Senior News Editor, international.
Before joining CNN in 2016, George spent eight years in Beijing as a magazine editor, covering news and social affairs across the greater China region. George studied English and American studies at the University of Manchester, where he was elected head of the university’s student union.
