Myanmar was hit by a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake on Friday, with tremors felt across Thailand as well as in nearby Chinese provinces.
It was the largest earthquake to hit Myanmar in more than a century, authorities say. More than 2,000 people are confirmed dead in the war-ravaged country, but experts fear the true death toll could take weeks to emerge.
The quake also triggered the collapse of buildings in Thailand, where authorities declared an “emergency zone” in the capital Bangkok. Workers on Monday were still trying to rescue dozens of people believed to be trapped under the rubble of an under-construction high-rise in the city.
