Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene left more than 200 people dead in the Southeast, another massive hurricane hit Florida.
Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key on Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm, bringing extreme rainfall, high winds and widespread power outages.
It could become one of the most destructive storms on record for Florida’s Gulf Coast, and its disastrous impacts are being felt over much of the state.
Editor’s note: Officials in Buncombe County, North Carolina, have reported they overcounted the Helene death toll in their region by as many as 30. This story has been updated to reflect the latest numbers.
