
Prince Andrew was born to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1960, the third of their four children. He is fifth in line to the throne, behind Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George and Prince Harry.

Prince Andrew served in the British Royal Navy for 22 years, including a stint as a helicopter pilot during the 1982 Falklands War between Britain and Argentina.

In 1986, Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson before a TV audience of 500 million. They became the Duke and Duchess of York.

In 1992 Prince Andrew's marriage to the Duchess of York -- referred to as "Fergie" -- failed. The public break-up included the publication of Fergie apparently having her toes sucked by another man. There divorce became official in 1996. Fergie reportedly fell into debt and went on to be a spokesperson for Weight Watchers.

In October 1998, Prince Andrew -- pictured here on a state visit to Fiji that November -- implied in an interview with the Mirror that Buckingham Palace aides had been misleading the media routinely "for the last 20 years" about the royal family. The Queen was reportedly furious at her son, who later backpedaled on his comments.

Prince Andrew, pictured with President Bill Clinton at Martha's Vineyard in 1999, is a keen golfer and reported to have a handicap that would allow him to play professionally.

In 2001, Prince Andrew became a UK trade envoy. He is pictured here with New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani the same year.

In 2008, Prince Andrew -- pictured here with the then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (C) told the International Herald Tribune newspaper that the U.S. could have avoided post-invasion chaos in Iraq had it learned from the British. "The fact is there is quite a lot of experience over here which is valid and should be listened to," it quoted him as saying.

In 2010, Prince Andrew had to distance himself from his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson's alleged offer to an undercover reporter to sell access to him for £500,000 ($723,000). "The Duke of York categorically denies any knowledge of any meeting or conversation between the Duchess of York and the News of the World journalist," Buckingham Palace said.

In 2011, Prince Andrew resigned as UK trade envoy. He had come under criticism for his friendship with U.S. billionaire Jeffrey Epstein who was jailed for 18 months in 2008 after admitting prostitution solicitation.

In January 2014, Buckingham Palace issued a statement denying that Prince Andrew had "any form of sexual contact or relationship" with a woman who had named him in a sex abuse lawsuit linked to Epstein.
