Brazilian chemical firm Braskem leads the way in the production of green plastics alternatives derived from sugarcane.

Braskem hopes its "sugar seats" will be used in football stadiums when Brazil hosts the 2014 World Cup.

It is hoping to extend its bio production with the launch of a new plant in 2013.

The company's existing green plant in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul is the first of its kind, says corporate marketing director Frank Alcantara.

Alcantara says most of Braskem's sugarcane is grown in the state of Sao Paulo, which is a long way from the protected Amazon rainforest.

Brazil has been producing ethanol from sugarcane since the 1970s, and Braskem has built on this technology in recent years.

It has a deal to install its "sugar seats" at Amsterdam ArenA, home of Ajax football club. Dignitaries signed up at 11 a.m. on November 11, 2011 -- which was Sustainability Day in the Netherlands.

Initially 2,000 green chairs will be put in, but in time all 54,000 seats will be made from the eco plastic.
