Here's what we know about the shooting at a San Jose transit facility

A gunman opened fire Wednesday morning at a public transit rail yard in San Jose, California, killing at least eight co-workers and wounding others, Deputy Russell Davis of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.

The gunman, an employee of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), is dead, Davis said. Law enforcement officers didn’t exchange gunfire with the gunman and investigators believe he took his own life, Davis said.

Here’s what we know about the shooting:

The gunman: He has been identified as Sam Cassidy, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed to CNN. San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told CNN’s Jake Tapper that “the victims and all the colleagues knew the shooter well.” Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said the victims worked together and were there this morning together.

The shooting: The shooting began just after 6:30 a.m. PT when several 911 calls reported shots fired near a VTA control center, a hub that stores light rail trains and a maintenance yard, Davis said.

The victims: While the names of the victims have not been released, Liccardo said he has spoken to three families. The mayor described the victims, VTA employees, as “essential workers” who risked their lives and showed up every day throughout the pandemic.

The motive: Investigators are looking into the gunman’s motive. Authorities are also investigating a fire at what is believed to be the gunman’s home, a source close to the investigation told CNN.

An American epidemic: President Biden sent his sympathies to the victims’ families and called for Congress to act on gun law reform. “Once again, I urge Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end this epidemic of gun violence in America,” Biden said. The mass shooting is the 232nd incident in which at least four people were shot in the US so far this year, according to a tally by the Gun Violence Archive.

San Jose shooter "spoke angrily about his co-workers and bosses," ex-wife says

Sam Cassidy, the suspected gunman in the mass shooting at a San Jose light rail yard where eight people were killed Wednesday, spoke angrily about his coworkers and resented his work, his ex-wife told a Northern California news outlet.

“He had two sides,” Cassidy’s ex-wife Cecilia Nelms told the Bay Area News Group, a CNN-affiliate, outside her home Wednesday. “When he was in a good mood, he was a great guy. When he was mad, he was mad.”

Nelms told the outlet, “he often spoke angrily about his co-workers and bosses, and at times directed his anger at her.”

Cassidy and all of the victims were employees of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), officials said. Authorities have not identified a motive in the shooting and it is not yet clear whether those killed were targeted.

According to the Bay Area News Group, Nelms said during their marriage, Cassidy “resented what he saw as unfair work assignments” and “would rant about his job when he got home.”

Nelms, reached by CNN on Facebook, did not respond to questions about Cassidy. Subsequent phone calls went unanswered.

Nelms was married to Cassidy for about 10 years until the couple filed for divorce in 2005. She has not been in touch with her ex-husband for about 13 years, according to the outlet.

“He just thought that some people got more easy-going things at work, and he’d get the harder jobs,” she reportedly told the Bay Area News Group.

The bodies of 6 shooting victims remain inside buildings at light rail yard, sheriff says

The bodies of six shooting victims are still inside the buildings where this morning’s mass shooting occurred at a San Jose light rail yard, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

Of the eight people who were killed by a gunman, six bodies remain inside two Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) buildings and two victims were transported to a hospital, Smith said. All victims were VTA employees.

The crime scene is still being processed and the coroner is working to notify victims’ next of kin, Smith added.

According to the sheriff, deputies responded to the scene as shots were still being fired in the building. Deputies were able to go inside and confront the suspect, who killed himself, she said.

Bomb-making equipment and ammunition were also found at the VTA yard, according to Smith.

The body of the suspect, identified by sources as Sam Cassidy, was moved from where he shot himself in an attempt to administer medical aid and is on now on a street, Smith said.

Multiple guns were used in the shooting, district attorney says

Multiple guns were used in today’s deadly mass shooting at a light rail yard in San Jose, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said at a news conference.

Rosen did not specify the types of weapons used in the shooting or whether they were obtained legally, but said they were not considered to be untraceable “ghost guns.”

Officials are still working to notify the families of the eight victims killed in the shooting, Rosen said, but he expects all notifications will be complete by the end of the day.

The district attorney said he did not know whether there may have been any red flags about the shooter’s intentions ahead of the tragedy.

A family assistance center has been created to help the family members, and witnesses, along with anyone affected by the shooting.

“We know tragically, that mass shootings affect different people in different ways,” said Rosen.

“Sadly, we have experience with these shootings,” he added, referring to the 2019 mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. “Honestly, I pray that this is the last time we have to open such a center in our county. We are going to do everything we can today in in the weeks and months ahead to support all of the victims and their families. And we’re also going to do everything that we can to find out if there’s anything that could have been done to prevent this tragedy. In the last two years in our county.”

Chicago mayor calls San Jose shooting a "terrible tragedy"

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot took a moment to acknowledge the mass shooting in San Jose on Wednesday following a city council meeting, calling the event a “terrible tragedy.”

The mayor said she has reached out to San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and will continue to push and advocate for additional common sense gun reforms.

“It’s way past time for us to act and do something to stop these kinds of mass shootings,” said Lightfoot. “We don’t know all the details yet, so I won’t opine about the motive or methods of the shooter, but this is a very, very sad day and a hard day for the city of San Jose.”

The victims "knew the shooter well," San Jose mayor says

 San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo

The suspect in this morning’s mass shooting at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail yard in San Jose knew the shooting victims, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

The gunman, identified by sources as Sam Cassidy, was also a VTA employee, according to Liccardo. Authorities confirmed Cassidy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

While the names of the victims have not been released, Liccardo said he has spoken to three families.

The victims, VTA employees, were working at a light rail maintenance facility. Liccardo described them as “essential workers” who risked their lives and showed up every day throughout the pandemic.

Liccardo said explosives have been found at one of the crime scenes, and noted investigators are “moving very slowly and very carefully in multiple scenes right now to try to put the pieces together to understand exactly what happened.”

Flags lowered to half-staff at White House following San Jose shooting

FBI and ATF assisting with "very sizable crime scene" investigation, official says

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and theBureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation into the shooting at the Valley Transit Authority that left eight employees dead, officials said at a news conference.

The FBI is helping with evidence, response and recovery, according to Craig Fair, special agent in charge of the San Francisco division of the FBI. The federal agency will provide ballistics, technical forensic equipment, and analysis, along with additional personnel to help analyze the “very sizable crime scene,” Fair said.

The ATF has brought in five bomb-sniffing dogs to assist in the search for any potential explosives. The agency is also providing investigative resources to trace firearms and ballistics evidence in an effort to link it to other firearm crimes that might be involved, said Joshua Jackson, special agent in charge for the ATF.

California governor expresses frustration over gun violence: "What the hell is wrong with us?"

California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed frustration over the trend of mass shootings in the United States at a news conference following today’s deadly shooting at a San Jose light rail yard.

“There is a numbness, I imagine, some of us are feeling about this because there’s a sameness to this, you know anywhere, USA. It just feels like it happens over and over and over again. Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat,” Newsom said.

Newsom recalled past mass shooting incidents that occurred in his state including, the Gilroy Garlic festival shooting and the San Bernardino shooting.

Newsom continued by thanking the swift action of law enforcement who rushed to the scene and offered words of support to the victims and their families.

Biden on San Jose shooting: At least eight families "will never be whole again"

President Biden will order the flags to be flown at half-staff following today’s mass shooting at a light rail yard in San Jose, California.

Biden said in a statement that it’s the fifth time he’s done so following a mass shooting in America.

Once again, I urge Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end this epidemic of gun violence in America,” he added.

Earlier today, Vice President Kamala Harris told CNN the shooting was “absolutely tragic.”

Santa Clara County sheriff describes the scene of the shooting

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith described the scene that deputies encountered when they entered the VTA light rail yard in San Jose, California, this morning.

She said the first teams that entered the building were members of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and the San Jose Police Department.

“There was active shooting going on at that time,” Smith said. “There were victims shot in two separate buildings. But they responded the way that they should. They took their life in their hands. And I know for sure that when the suspect knew that law enforcement was there, he took his own life. Our deputies were right there at that time.”

The sheriff said the shooting involves a “very complex investigation,” which also includes the San Jose Police Department. Police are investigating a fire at a home that is believed to be that of the gunman, a source close to the investigation tells CNN.

Smith went on to say that sheriff’s officials are also working to identify the victims.

Vice President Harris calls San Jose shooting "absolutely tragic"

Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the San Jose shooting that left at least eight victims dead this morning, calling the attack “absolutely tragic.”

President Biden was briefed on the shooting by Homeland Security Adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall. The White House told reporters it “continues to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with local officials to offer any assistance as needed.”

Biden has yet to release a statement on the shooting.

A fire erupted at the gunman's home around time of the shooting, source says

Emergency responders leave a home, rear, being investigated in connection to a shooting at a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) facility, Wednesday, May 26, in San Jose, California..

A house that erupted in flames in San Jose at around the same time officers responded to a mass shooting at a Valley Transportation Authority facility is believed to be the home of the gunman, a source close to the investigation tells CNN.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said in an interview with CNN affiliate KGO earlier that a fire was reported at the home of the gunman, though he did not specify the location.

“That is certainly the information that I have, is that there was a fire at the shooter’s home, there was nobody found inside the home, thank God,” Liccardo said.

Firefighters responded to a fire at the home in the 1100 block of Angmar Court in San Jose at 6:36 a.m. local time, according to tweets from the San Jose Fire Department. The first 911 calls about the shooting at the VTA facility roughly 8 miles away began at 6:34 a.m., sheriff’s officials said.

Video, shot by a neighbor, showed a home with smoke pouring out as firefighters respond to the blaze.

The neighbor, Duk Kyun Suh, started recording the video early on during the fire. In it, firefighters appear to be just arriving on scene.

It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the two-alarm fire that caused heavy damage to the home and left the structure uninhabitable, the fire department said.

Asked about the house fire at a news conference, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said the San Jose Police Department was working on that part of the investigation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no injuries were reported, according to Erica Ray, spokesperson for San Jose Fire Department.

President Biden has been briefed on the San Jose shooting

President Biden has been briefed on a mass shooting in San Jose, where at least eight people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a public transit rail yard.

“The President has been briefed on the mass shooting and the tragic loss of life in San Jose by his Homeland Security Adviser, Liz Sherwood-Randall. The White House continues to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with local officials to offer any assistance as needed,” the White House told pool Wednesday.

What we know: The suspect, a male employee of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), is dead, authorities said. He has been identified as Sam Cassidy, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed to CNN.

Police also received information about explosive devices inside the transit building, which the bomb squad is investigating, he said.

The shooting occurred in the VTA rail yard — not the operations control center — at a time when light rail was starting up for the day, VTA Board Chairperson Glenn Hendricks said. The yard is where the VTA vehicles are maintained and dispatched.

The San Jose shooter has been identified, source says

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the San Jose mass shooting investigation confirms to CNN that the shooter has been identified as Sam Cassidy.

In a news conference earlier today, law enforcement and city authorities said the shooter was dead and that he was a VTA employee.

Homeland Security chief sends condolences to families of San Jose shooting victims

White House says it is "monitoring the situation" in San Jose

Principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre

Principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre did not say whether or not President Biden has been briefed on today’s deadly shooting in San Jose, California, instead saying that the White House is “monitoring the situation.”

She said that while all the details of the shooting are not yet known, it’s the latest example of what the President has called an “epidemic of gun violence.”

“We still don’t know all of the details, but what’s clear, as the President has said, is that we are suffering from an epidemic of gun violence in this country, both in mass shootings and in the lives that are being taken in daily gun violence that doesn’t make national headlines,” she said.

“That’s why he has already taken an initial set of actions on gun violence that will save lives, and that’s why he’s calling on Congress to take action, including calling on the Senate to pass the three bills to strengthen background checks that have already cleared the House with bipartisan support, and which have the overwhelming backing of the American people,” Jean-Pierre added.

Earlier today, a gunman opened fire at a public transit rail yard in San Jose, California, causing multiple casualties and fatalities, Deputy Russell Davis of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.

Bomb squad is on scene and searching for explosive devices, officials say

A bomb squad is on scene searching for explosive devices, said Deputy Russell Davis, with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

“We received information that there are explosive devices that are located inside the building,” he said. “With that being said, we activated our bomb squad, which is currently out on scene and trying to determine — pretty much we’re trying to clear out every room and every crevice of that building and ensure that the public safety is rest assured if we open up that building later on in the near future.”

“It’s going to take some time for us just to go in there and render the area safe so we can have investigators going on scene to determine — collect evidence and gather all the information that we can at this point,” Davis added.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said the area has been cordoned off while authorities search the building.
