The Dominican Republic is a well established mecca for sugar-sand beaches, world-class golf courses and top-end resorts.
But adventure also abounds across the country, with numerous opportunities to add steps to your Fitbit by jumping off cliffs, climbing mountains, exploring caves and maybe scraping a knee or two along the way.
The most popular of the DR’s adventure activities – at least according to this TripAdvisor survey – is a hike through the spectacular 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua, known locally as the 27 Charcos de Damajagua.

The protected natural monument is hidden away in the Dominican Republic’s northern mountains, in the community of Imbert, Puerto Plata.
Most visitors take in the area as part of a tour, which usually lasts two to three hours – licensed guides are required when visiting.
Not all of the pools are accessible to visitors. Children under eight are allowed to venture only to the first pool.
