Hi from CNN, this is Madeleine Thompson with five things you need to know for Thursday, November 21st. Brazil's federal police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people over an alleged plot to assassinate the country's sitting president. That's according to CNN Brazil. The charges stem from an investigation into an attempted coup after the 2022 presidential elections in which Bolsonaro was defeated. Federal police said Bolsonaro had, quote, full knowledge of the planned coup, including an effort to murder his successor, President Lula da Silva, and overturn the election results. They say the alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training and special forces. CNN has reached out to a representative of Bolsonaro for comment. The former president has repeatedly denied allegations of attempting a coup.

The father of an accused school shooter in Georgia has pleaded not guilty to 29 charges, alleging that he shares responsibility for the September shooting. Colin Gray didn't appear in court today on charges including second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. The plea was entered on his behalf by his attorney, who waived a formal arraignment. Investigators say Gray bought his 14 year old son, Colt, an AR 15 style rifle for Christmas that was used to kill two students and two teachers at Appalachia High School in September. Colt Gray has pleaded not guilty to 55 counts and will be tried as an adult. Attorneys for the prosecution and defense declined to comment. Colin Gray is only the third person charged in the U.S. in connection with a school shooting carried out by their child.

Scientists say the avian flu virus, isolated from a hospitalized teenager in Vancouver, has mutations in key areas that could help the virus spread more easily in humans. There's no indication that the mutated virus has traveled beyond this patient, so it's not a threat at this point. But scientists say it shows what the virus could be capable of. CNN's Brenda Goodman explains why they're concerned.

That's right, Madeline. Scientists have been nervously watching H5n1 as it's infected a growing list of animals, including poultry, wild birds and more recently, dairy cattle. But this is the first time in more than two decades that scientists have seen the H5n1 virus start to change at these locations on its genome. Scientists have been keeping an eye on these positions because they could help the virus become better at attaching to cells in the human nose and lungs, which would allow it to more easily infect people. The virus doesn't appear to spread beyond this teen, however, who is still in critical condition. But scientists say if the virus was able to evolve this way in a patient one time, it could do it again, which shows it has the potential to become a bigger threat.

'So a lot of people believe President-elect Donald Trump's second term will bring a crack down at the border. It was one of his top campaign promises. And most of the people CNN's David Culver met in southern Arizona say they're excited to see it.

'Hey, Madeleine. So we traveled to the front lines of the US-Mexico border where deputies, ranchers and even vigilante groups are taking on cartel smuggling operations. We rode along with deputies chasing suspected smugglers. And we visited with Jim and Sue Chilton. Their Arizona ranch has become a crossing point for traffickers in the last three and a half years. Their hidden cameras have captured more than 3700 people in camouflage and carrying backpacks trekking across their land. Some of them were even armed. The couple is now counting on President Trump to deliver on his promise to finish the wall and secure the border, even if that means sending the military. But some law enforcement and vigilante groups warn that may not be enough to fix it.
