A major winter storm blasted much of the central and eastern United States, bringing record-breaking temperature drops and harsh snowy conditions that resulted in flight cancellations, highway closures and several state emergency declarations.
Dozens of people also have been reported dead in the storm, which buried the city of Buffalo, New York, in nearly 52 inches of snow, trapping residents at home -- many without heat as a blizzard took out power lines.
