CNN projects that US Sen. Raphael Warnock will win a runoff election in Georgia, giving Democrats a 51-49 majority in the Senate.
Warnock's win provides his party with a majority that likely won't have to rely as heavily on Vice President Kamala Harris' tie-breaking vote, and it allows Majority Leader Chuck Schumer more control of key committees and some slack in potentially divisive judicial and administrative confirmation fights.
While the Democrats gained a Senate seat in this year's midterm elections, they lost control of the House of Representatives. That will hurt President Joe Biden's domestic agenda, though it was far from the "red wave" that many experts had predicted.
Dozens of governorships, secretaries of states and attorneys general were also on the ballot this November.
