Chicago beat out locations in New York and Hawaii to host the library

Washington CNN  —

The organization planning President Barack Obama’s library has settled upon an architectural team to design the Chicago structure.

Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, a New York-based husband-and-wife team, was selected by the Obama Foundation to lead the design process for the Obama Presidential Center, which will be situated on a to-be-determined plot on Chicago’s South Side.

A Chicago firm, Interactive Design Architects, will also provide local knowledge to the project, the foundation said on Thursday.

The groups beat out several other design contenders. Tod Williams and Billie Tsien are known for their museum design projects around the United States.

Chicago, where Obama and his family still own a home, beat out locations in New York and Hawaii to host the library. However, the first family is expected to remain in Washington after Obama’s term ends next year as Sasha Obama completes high school.
