(CNN)Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto is recovering after his gallbladder was removed early Friday, according to a statement released by his office.
Peña Nieto was taken to the Central Military Hospital in Mexico after experiencing physical discomfort and underwent successful surgery at 7:30 a.m., his office said.
In July 2013, Peña Nieto underwent surgery to remove a benign nodule on his thyroid gland.
He took office in December 2012 and his term will end in 2018.
The President is expected to return to his regularly scheduled duties by Monday.
