Bottle feeding is beautiful, too
Washington photographer Nikke Whitman shot a series of images called "Bottle Feeding is Beautiful, Too!" For the series, she photographed Sarah, a mom of seven, and her youngest son, Louis.

Sarah breastfed many of her children, Whitman said, but experienced pain from clogged ducts. "She's a busy mama, with six other kids running around," Whitman said, and bottle feeding was a positive experience for them.

Brittnae had hoped to breastfeed her son, Mason, but he continued to lose weight after birth. After several attempts to increase her supply, she began to feed Mason bottles of donated breast milk. "My struggle to breastfeed and my journey to find what was best for our family has completely humbled me," Brittnae wrote on Whitman's blog.

Whitman said she wanted Brittnae to have the same kind of beautiful, tender photos that a breastfeeding mother might have, because nourishing her child with a bottle was just as beautiful.

Whitman photographed an adoptive family that included two children who used bottles. For Jill, their mom, it meant the entire family could bond.

Older brother Ethan was able to spend time with his siblings, Isaac and Ellie, during feedings. "It was a team effort," Whitman said of bottle feeding.

"I've heard people say 'There's no bonding in this photo,' but Rachel, she is a spitfire," Whitman said of one baby she photographed self-feeding with a bottle. "Even at that small, she's very independent."
