Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby announces charges against police officers in Freddie Gray's death

Avalanche of emotion and attention on social media for Mosby's decision

CNN  —

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby became a superhero Friday as praise flooded in on social media.

The online reaction came after Mosby announced that charges had been filed against six police officers in connection with the April 19 death of Freddie Gray. For days there have been protests regarding Gray’s death in police custody that led to rioting and unrest in the city where Mosby became chief prosecutor in January.

Her announcement, ending with an advisement to young people that “our time has come,” was met with an avalanche of emotion and attention.

Mosby, 35, comes from a long line of police officers, including her grandfather, four uncles and her mother, and she noted her family ties to law enforcement on Friday. She also asked for calm as she pursues the case against the officers, who face charges ranging from second-degree depraved-heart murder to manslaughter to second-degree assault in connection with the death of Gray following his April 12 arrest.

“I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace,’ ” she said. “Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man.”
