And with startup Rover, they'll never have to. The predecessor to competitor DogVacay, Rover is an online database of dog lovers, whether it's pet owners looking for a dog walker or a petless soul who wants to make some extra cash by hanging out with a pup.
It's free for dog owners and the dogless to sign up. The average nightly rate will run a dog owner between $25 and $35. (Rover takes a small percentage of the sitter's fee.)
The Seattle-based startupoperates in 9,000 U.S. cities with over 25,000 vetted "sitters." Rover reviews every sitter's profile and offers background checks for $5.25 (those with approved background checks receive a badge on their Rover page). They also offer free insurance and 24/7 emergency support.
