San Francisco Raw Feeders is going up against the $56 billion pet food business -- and making strides.
Kasie Maxwell started the company 11 years ago, turning her habit of feeding raw meat to her Great Danes into a working business. She now offers her customers locally-made, responsibly-sourced pet food, treats and herbal supplements. All of the products are made with organic ingredients.
The business started in a garage but now has its own warehouse and 500 members, who pay an annual membership fee and get a 30% discount on products.
"There's a camaraderie with other small business owners and it's nice to support each other," Maxwell said, calling San Francisco a place that inspires innovation and creativity.
"It's a really special place," she said. "We are lucky to live here."
