Portland International handles 13 million passengers a year, nearly 90% of all the airline traffic in the state of Oregon, according to FlightStats, a website that tracks airline fares, performance and flying conditions.

Despite serving several weather-challenged destinations, including the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver and Alaska, Portland is one of the nation's most dependable airports.

Its on-time departure rate in 2012 almost duplicated the 87.8% it recorded in 2011, according to the Department of Transportation.

Arrival rates are nearly as good. In 2012, 84.6% of flights came in on time, the ninth best ranking among the 29 major airports.
