Absurd airline fees

Pay $40 to be the first to board? Or $25 for your carry-on bag? These are some of the latest in a slew of fees some airlines are charging to drum up billions in extra revenue.

United's FareLock fee

United's FareLock fee allows potential customers to lock in a fare.

You can pay some airline fees without even booking a ticket.

Using United's "FareLock" service, customers can pay up to $20 to hold a quoted fare for either 72 hours or 7 days. United says the fee allows customers to eliminate the risk of the fare selling out.

But unless that fare rises, the non-refundable fee is basically worthless.
