Fast food workers are often underpaid when they're supposed to be earning time-and-a-half pay. Subway chains across the country have been found in violation of pay and hour rules in more than 1,100 investigations spanning from 2000 to 2013, mostly including overtime violations.
Last year, the Department of Labor and Subway partnered up to try to decrease violations, but fixing the problem can be difficult. Franchise restaurants are often independently owned and operated. While Subway headquarters tries to educate its franchises about the Fair Labor Standards Act laws, it's up to local owners to actually follow them.
