Took on volunteer work

I went to school for eight years to become a teacher, but after graduating with my master's degree, it took me three years to find an actual job.
During that time, I lost my home to foreclosure. I was fortunate to have my parents help me out a bit.
I fought through the trenches of substitute teaching during the downtime, earning some income sporadically. I was unable to find any other work, so I did a lot volunteering with local high school theater students instead.
Volunteering was a great way for me to get out there, make connections in the local schools, and build my résumé a bit.
Then, about a month ago, I was hired to work as a part-time social studies teacher. I'm at a school that I love, and while it's only part-time, that still looks 100% better on my résumé than a fourth year of subbing.
