The U.S. technology company has come a long way from its roots in computer hardware and now offers engineers a way into consulting, cloud computing and data management.

"IBM is known for having some of the best career opportunities for anyone who wants to work in consulting with an engineering background," said Tattanelli.

IBM (IBM) is one of the 100 largest companies in the world and boasts well over 400,000 employees. The firm generated nearly $105 billion in sales in 2012.
