Here's a sad statistic: the average driver loses eight working days a year due to congestion, according to a new report on global traffic by GPS manufacturer TomTom.
But spare a thought for Moscow drivers. TomTom's latest traffic index ranks Moscow as the worst of 169 cities around the world for traffic jams.
Journeys during the morning rush hour in the Russian capital take more than twice as long as those during less busy periods.
The TomTom index pinpoints cities that experience the sharpest increases in travel times between non-congested periods and peak periods.

The TomTom Traffic Index is based on real travel time data captured by vehicles driving across the entire road network. TomTom's traffic database contains over nine trillion data measurements. The Traffic Index compares travel times during non-congested periods with travel times during peak hours. Cities with the highest rankings in the index experienced the sharpest increases in travel times between non-congested periods and peak periods. Cities in Asia were not included in the index due to insufficient data.
