Millennials may not be buying houses but they know the importance of real estate assets.

The Vanguard REIT ETF (VNQ) invests in stocks of real estate investment trusts, or REITS. These companies own office buildings, hotels, condominiums and other properties.

Because they pay out hefty dividends, REITs have been a popular way for investors to generate income in the historically low interest rate environment.
