Beneath a Balinese cliff, a secret surf spot

Famed as one of Bali's secret beaches, Nyang Nyang is far from undiscovered. Yet this mile-long strip of golden sand, framed by jungled cliffs, green meadow, and blue ocean with a foaming arc of surf, still hits the sweet spot. Descend the cliffs by 500-odd stone steps or a steep rubble track to a blissfully undeveloped strand. Although the rip current limits Nyang Nyang's charm for swimmers, surfers love the solid, consistent reef break and generally uncrowded waves.
Non-surfers can set up camp among the fan palms, catch some rays, hunt for shells, sip cold drinks from the discreet vendors, watch crabs scuttle through the rockpools, or go on a quest for the truly secret beach beyond.
When the winds are kind, generally between May and October, the Bukit Peninsula's rugged coast makes for epic paraglides, independently or in tandem. A local operation offers flights from beside the little clifftop eatery, which also sells cold beer to accompany a stunning Bali sunset or recuperate from the ascent.
